CDP News: 30 Sept. 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It’s hard to believe that October is right around the corner, but autumn is well underway.

Speaking of fall, the CDP is headed back to school! Next Tuesday and Wednesday, we’ll be at the University of Montana in Missoula to deliver a two-day training on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia as part of our University Counseling Center Core Competency Extended (UC4-e) program. To find out how to bring the UC4 or UC4-e program to your local college or university, head over to the Speakers Bureau section of our website.

We’ve got a couple of online training events coming up soon as well. Next week, on Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be presenting a Prolonged Exposure Therapy training. Then on the 12-13th of October, we’ll be holding a suicide prevention training as well. Both of these events will be held via Second Life. There are still some spots left, but if you’re interested in attending, we suggest signing up soon as space in these events is limited.

Speaking of online events, our next CDP Presents webinar will be held on 18 October. Kimberly Copeland and Dr. Marjorie Weinstock will present “Opioid Use Disorders in Military-Connected Patients: An Overview of Current Trends and Treatment.” As with most CDP Presents events, those who attend the webinar and complete a short post-training survey/evaluation will be eligible to receive one free Continuing Education (CE) credit.

In the face-to-face category, the One-Week Regional Civilian Training program also has a couple of events coming up soon. The Rocky Mountain Regional Civilian 1-Week Training program will be held in Denver, CO from 24-28 October.  Registration is also ongoing for the one-week training event in Charleston, South Carolina, which will run from 5-9 December.  These events are the perfect opportunity for those interested in working with a military population or for anyone looking to increase their skills. Registration for either event is $95 and comes with 34 CE credits. Head over to the event pages for more details on the individual events.

This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective column was by Dr. Elizabeth Parins entitled “September is Suicide Awareness Month”. Suicide prevention is a very important topic for us all year around, but especially this month. Dr. Parins looks at the stigma of suicide, the extent of suicide among Veterans, and the warning signs, as they relate to Service members and Veterans. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s all for this time. Have a great weekend and enjoy fall while you can. We hope to see everyone right back here on Monday and we’ll have a brand new entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
