CDP News: July 1, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. Everyone here is getting ready for the long holiday weekend, but before we take off, let’s review this week.

On Tuesday, we held our first online version training in Assessment and Treatment of Chronic Pain via Second Life. Dr. Diana Sermanian and Dr. Diana Dolan presented and things went quite well! Though this was the first time we’ve held this training, it certainly won’t be the last. So if you missed it, keep an eye on our upcoming training calendar or sign up for our online events email list to find out the next time we’ll offer it.

Speaking of upcoming online events, registration is currently available for the next two online EBP training events, the 20-21 July training on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) as well as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) training on 17-18 August. You can also sign up for next month’s CDP Presents webinar, “Use of Mobile Applications in Clinical Practice with Service Members and Veterans.” Dr. Erick Frick and Dr. Kevin Holloway will be showcasing some of the great technology that’s out there to help both clinicians and patients make treatment more effective.

We don’t have any training events on the calendar next week, since it’s going to be shortened by the holiday, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep learning. We’ve got lots of great opportunities right here on the CDP’s website. You can head over to the eLearning page to see the wide selection of courses we’ve got available. These can be taken for free or for CEs for a fee. There are also free CEs available through the “Military Culture for Healthcare Providers” course. Finally, you can also visit the Joining Forces Wellness 2015 Video Archive and watch the presentations from last year’s event for CE/CME/CNE credits. If there are other courses you’d like to see on the site, feel free to reach out and let us know!

This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective entry was the second part of Dr. Matt Sacks’ series, entitled “Downrange Comedy – Humor in Deployed Settings”. This time around Dr. Sacks chats with The Daily Show’s Roy Wood Jr. about performing for troops overseas and how the experience changed him. Dr. Sacks also talks with Army Specialist Michael Dillon to find out what those performances are like for the troops themselves. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s for this week’s edition of CDP News. We hope everyone has a great Fourth of July. We’ll be skipping next week’s “By the Numbers,” but we’ll be back to work with more content the rest of the week!
