CDP News: July 22, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We had a couple of events this week to talk about and we’re laying the groundwork for even more coming up soon.

On Tuesday, we were supposed to hold this month’s CDP Presents webinar, “Use of Mobile Applications in Clinical Practice with Service Members and Veterans.” However, we ran into some technical difficulties with the Adobe Connect servers and we were forced to reschedule it. We’re still working on finding a new date for the event. Stay tuned and we’ll emailing all the registered participants once we have a new date in place. In the meantime, you can sign up for August’s CDPP event. It will be entitled “Helping Military Couples Enhance Connection After Deployment” and will be led by Dr. April Thompson on 23 August, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern.

Thankfully, our second event on Wednesday and Thursday, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) via Second Life, went much better. A big thank you to all of our attendees, as well as our presenters Dr. Sharon Birman and Dr. Marjorie Weinstock, for a great event. Next up is our Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) training on 17-18 August. This is a popular training and is certain to fill up quickly. If you’d like to attend, sign up soon! If you don’t want to miss out on future online training events, be sure and check out training calendar where we’ve got a list of online events through the end of the year. You can also sign up for our online events mailing list to be contacted via email when we open registration for events.

Speaking of upcoming events, next week CDP trainers are back on the road when we head to Texas to present the University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program at Houston Community College on Wednesday. Then on Thursday we’ll be in Birmingham to present a talk on suicide prevention to the Alabama AHEC. If you’d like to learn how you can bring a CDP trainer to your organization to present the UC4 course or other training, head over to our Speakers Bureau page to find out more information.

This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective column was by Dr. Regina Shillinglaw, entitled “Book Review of Psychotherapy Case Formulation”. In it, Dr. Shillinglaw writes about the importance of case conceptualization. She also discusses how this book can be a helpful tool in building case conceptualization skills. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s for this time around. Hopefully, everyone is able to stay cool in this hot summer weather! We’ll see you all next week for another fresh entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
