CDP News: July 29, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re heading into the final month of the summer and getting ready for a busy fall with plenty of events, both face-to-face and virtual.

On Wednesday, our trainers visited Texas to present the University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program at Houston Community College. Then on Thursday, we headed to Birmingham, Alabama to deliver a presentation on suicide prevention to the Alabama AHEC. These are only two of the many options available as part of the CDP Speakers Bureau. If you’re interested in having the CDP present at your organization’s next event or gathering, head over to our Speakers Bureau page for more information.

If you’re not able to make it to our in-person event, we’ve got you covered! We’ve got multiple options for attending events online. Our next virtual event will be a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) training on 17-18 August. Registration is filling up quickly for this event. There’s about a week and a half left to sign up, but we may close registration earlier than that if we fill up sooner. If you’d like to attend, we recommend signing up soon.  Next week, we’ll also be opening registration for the online Prolonged Exposure (PE) training on 20-21 September, so keep an eye out for that. You can also sign up for our online events mailing list and we’ll notify you via email when we open up registration for future events.

Registration is currently available for our next CDP Presents webinar, “Helping Military Couples Enhance Connection After Deployment” and will be led by Dr. April Thompson on 23 August, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern. As with most of our CDPP events, participants who attend and complete a short post-course evaluation/survey will be eligible to receive one free CE.

This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective column was by Laura Copland, entitled “Pondering the Question of Prescribed Cannabis Use and the Potential Effect on Trauma and Stressor-related Treatment”. Medical marijuana use is increasing as more and more states legalize the drug for treating a wide variety of ailments. In her entry, she examines some of the questions that can arise for behavioral health providers. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s for this time around. As always, if you have any suggestions or ideas that you’d like to see in the CDP News, feel free to contact us through the website. Thanks for reading and we’ll see you next week!
