CDP News: June 3, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It was a slower week than usual, due to the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, but we’ve got plenty of events on the horizon.

On Wednesday and Thursday, we were in Kokomo, IN for the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program. Also on Wednesday and Thursday, CDP trainers were in Denton, TX to present a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training at the University of North Texas. This was part of our University Counseling Center Core Competency Extended (UC4-e) program. This is the follow-up to the standard UC4 program, which offers instruction on evidence-based treatments. For more information about the UC4 and UC4-E programs, click here.

Registration closes on Sunday for our next Regional Civilian One-Week training event. This event will be held in Columbus, OH, 13-17 June. However, if you attend our June event, we’ll be holding other iterations of this program later in the year. We’re still working on finalizing the details, dates and locations for these ones. If you’d like to be notified via email when registration opens for future iterations, please fill out this form.

Speaking of upcoming events, we’ve very excited to hold The Summer Institute: Preparing for a Military-Focused Career all next week. This week-long event will bring doctoral students interested in applying for military internships from around the country and provide them with training on military culture, the work of military psychologists, and evidence-based strategies to treat military members. This is a great program that was very successful last year. We’re looking forward to meeting and working with all of the participants this time around. For more information about the Summer Institute, head over to the program’s page on our site.

If you haven’t already seen it, we’d like to direct your attention to the 2015 Joining Forces Wellness Week Video Archive. We’ve got recordings of the five presentations from last year’s event. These hour-long presentations are on a variety of military-orientated topics. Those who watch them and complete a short post-course evaluation will also be eligible for one free CE/CME/CNE for each of the five sessions.

This week in the CDP blog, Dr. Matthew Sacks interviewed comedian Kathleen Madigan, who has appeared on numerous television shows and specials. Dr. Sacks’ entry is titled, “Downrange Comedy – Humor in Deployed Settings.” In it, they talked about her work with the United Service Organizations (USO) performing for Service members in a deployed setting. It’s very interesting to hear a different “behind-the-scenes” perspective on these shows. Keep an eye out for Dr. Sacks’ follow-up entry where he talks with Roy Wood Jr. from the Daily Show. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s all for this time around. We hope everyone has the chance to get out and enjoy the weather! Make sure you come back on Monday for the latest entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
