CDP News: Nov. 25, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This week was a bit slow due to the holiday, but there’s plenty coming in the next few weeks to talk about.

As cold as it is outside, summer may see far away, but we’d like to remind everyone about The Summer Institute: Preparing for a Military-Focused Career. This five-day course is intended for psychology doctoral students who are interested in applying for a military internship in 2017 or 2018. It is designed to provide firsthand knowledge of military culture, showcase the work of military psychologists, and some of the evidence-based strategies used to treat Veterans and Service members. Click here for more details about the program. Act fast, as applications for this program are due by 30 December.

Registration closes this weekend for our upcoming one-week civilian training event in Charleston, South Carolina, which will run from 5-9 December.  This event will be held in conjunction with the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program.  This five-day training event will be led by CDP faculty and cover a wide variety of topics relating to working with a military population, from military culture to TBIs, to PTSD to the treatment of depression and suicide. Registration for this event is $95 and comes with 34 CE credits. For more information or to sign up, check out the event page here.

On Wednesday, we’ll be holding a training on “Military and Veteran Couples: Elements of the Assessment Process,” which will focus on providing key elements of the assessment process when treating military and Veteran couples. This presentation be held online via Zoom teleconferencing software. It will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Eastern and has a $5 registration fee. Those who attend the course will be eligible for 2 continuing education credits. For more information or to sign up, visit the event page here. Coming up on 6 December, we’ll be holding our next CDP Presents monthly webinar. The topic this time around will be “Use of Mobile Applications in Clinical Practice with Service Members and Veterans.” Dr. Erin Frick and Dr. Kevin Holloway will provide a brief overview of some of the many great smartphone apps that are available to help treat patients. As with most of our CDPP events, those who attend and complete a brief post-training survey/evaluation will be eligible for one free CE. Our final training event of the year will be an online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) training on 15-16 December. This event will be held in Second Life.

This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective column was by Chris Adams. We took a look back at this year’s Joining Forces Wellness Week webinar series. CDP has been extremely proud to support the JFWW for the past three years and this year was no exception! It was a great week of informative presentations. Thousands of providers attended the online sessions and we hope you were one of them. However, if you missed it, all of the events will be available for on-demand viewing soon.

That’s all for now. We hope everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving! We’ll see you next week as we head into December and get ready for the holidays.
