CDP News: Nov. 27, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. Thanksgiving slowed us down quite a bit this week, but we’ve still got plenty of events coming up before the rest of the holidays roll around, so let’s take a look.

On Thursday our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program will be in Albany , GA to present at Albany State University. It’s our last UC4 event of the year, since most schools will be headed to their holiday break soon. However, we’re always looking for more schools to visit. If you’d like to find out more about the UC4 program and how to bring it to your local college or university, head over to our UC4 section here.

The holidays may be effecting our travel schedule, but we’ve still got lots of online training opportunities for everyone. A week from Wednesday, on 9 Decembers, we’ll be holding our monthly CDP Presents webinar from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST. Dr. Kimberly Copeland and Dr. Marjorie Weinstock will lead this event, which will be entitled, "Understanding Depression in Service Members and Veterans: An Overview." Those who sign up, attend the presentation, and complete a post-event evaluation will receive one free CE. We’ve also got recordings of our previous events in this series available for on-demand viewing here.

After that our next upcoming online event will be 15-16 December, when we hold a training on Prolonged Exposure via Second Life. Unfortunately, registration for this event has reached capacity; though there are a few remaining slots on the waiting list, in case of cancellation. However, registration is still available for our online two-day training on 14-15 January, which is on Cognitive Processing Therapy. Registration for this one is $30 and comes with 13.5 CEs

If you’re interested in learning more about military culture and would like the opportunity to gain some free CEUs, we invite you to take the four-module Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals. This self-paced online course is designed to help providers gain an understanding of the importance of and breadth of military culture. Each module in the course is eligible for two CEU credits upon completion of the final exam, for a total of eight possible credits.

Speaking of military culture, in June 2016 the CDP will be presenting the second iteration of our Summer Institute: Preparing for a Military-Focused Career. This five-day course is for doctoral students in clinical or counseling psychology who anticipate applying for a military internship. If you’re interested in more information about this course, check out our Staff Perspective entry in the CDP Blog this week. In it, Dr. Diana Sermanian talks more about the Summer Institute. Dr. Sermanian her own career search as well as the history and underlying intent behind the program. If you’re interested or if you know someone else who might be, the deadline to apply for the Summer Institute is 31 December. Due to the holiday, there’s no Research Update this week, but it will be back and better than ever next week!

That’s all for this time around. We hope everyone has a great weekend with their family and friends. We’ll see everyone back here on Monday as we wrap up November with a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
