CDP News: Nov 4, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. November looks to be another busy month, as we’ve got several large events coming up.

To start with, we’re very excited about the upcoming Joining Forces Wellness Week, 7-11 November. This week will feature a series of hour-long webinars, from noon to 1 p.m. eastern, every day focusing on topics regarding the health of Service members, Veterans, and their families. Participants who attend and complete a short post-training survey/evaluation will be eligible to receive one free Continuing Education credit (CE). Click here to learn about the specific topics for each day’s session or to register for the courses.

Today we’re holding our first ever University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) in an online environment. This program is designed to address the social, cultural, clinical, and campus-specific concerns of Service members and Veterans. We’ve got numerous participants joining us from colleges and universities all over the country. We’re very happy to reach so many participants and schools with this important training. We’re hoping to hold more of these in the future, so if you’re interested in taking part, keep an eye on our training calendar.

We’ve got a couple of other great online training events coming up as well. On the 16-17 of November, we’ll be presenting a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training via Second Life. The registration deadline is next Friday, but capacity is limited. So if you’re interested in attending, we suggest signing up soon. Then at the end of the month, 30 November, we’ll be holding a training on “Military and Veteran Couples: Elements of the Assessment Process,” which will focus on providing key elements of the assessment process when treating military and Veteran couples. This presentation will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Eastern and has a $5 registration fee. For more information or to sign up, visit the event page here.

If you’re looking for face-to-face events, registration is open for the one-week civilian training event in Charleston, South Carolina, which will run from 5-9 December.  If you’re looking to enhance your skills working with a military population, these events are an exceptional opportunity to learn about a wide variety of topics. Registration for this event is $95 and comes with 34 CE credits. For more information or to sign up, check out the event page here.

This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective column was by Dr. Lisa French entitled “Military Family Appreciate – A Focus on Military Spouses”. November is Military Family Appreciation Month and Dr. French helps kick off our spotlight on military families this month with her entry. In it, she discusses the challenges, opportunities, and resources available to military spouses. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend and don’t forget to set your clock back! See you on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
