The percentage of young adults with a parent who served in the military, according to a recent article in Military Times -- ‘Warrior caste’: Is a public disconnect hurting military recruiting efforts? This is a significant drop from 40% in 1995.

According to research by Booz Allen Hamilton and Blue Star Families, more than 80% of Service members recommended joining the military to their children in the late 1990s. By 2017, that percentage had dropped to 40%.

Said Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson at a Bipartisan Policy Center event, “Are we becoming a warrior caste where those who serve are in families with long traditions of service?” Not, she noted, that there is anything wrong with that. "But does it raise the civilian-military divide?”
