Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD – Group Applications

420 minutes (10 minute break required every 90 mins). Course covers 1 day

Description

This intensive 1-day module provides training in using CPT with groups of trauma survivors as described in the guide, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Veteran/Military Version – Therapist’s Manual by Resick et al., 2008. Completion of the basic 2-day CPT training is a prerequisite for this module.

Outline

  1. Implementation issues specific to group application of CPT: Group member and therapist responsibilities; therapist skills that facilitate group CPT; CPT formats for group (PT, CPT-C, combination individual plus group CPT)

  2. Session 1: Group rules, psycho-education, identifying the index trauma, assigning the impact statement

  3. Session 2: Processing the impact statement and identifying “stuck points” in a group format; teaching ABC worksheets

  4. Sessions 3 and 4: Reviewing ABC homework, modeling Socratic method; introducing the trauma processing practice assignment; trauma processing through addressing stuck points; introducing the Challenging Questions worksheet

  5. Sessions 5 and 6: Reviewing Challenging Questions; introducing and reviewing Patterns of Problematic Thinking worksheet; introducing the Challenging Beliefs worksheet

  6. Sessions 7 to 11: Review Challenging Beliefs worksheets on stuck points as well as themes that are introduced beginning in session 7 themes (safety, trust, power/control and esteem and intimacy); assign final impact statement

  7. Session 12: Review Challenging Beliefs worksheets and final trauma impact assignment; consolidate treatment gains; review of skills learned through course of CPT

Learning Objectives

  1. To enumerate pros and cons of doing CPT in a group format.

  2. To describe methods for detecting and addressing avoidance in group.

  3. To describe ways to identify and address the index trauma without members sharing trauma accounts within the group.

  4. To identify techniques for group management within the CPT protocol.

  5. To implement the CPT standard protocol or CPT-C protocol in group format.

  6. To identify ways to help members assist each other through the group CPT treatment process

Notes

Participants are required to have completed the basic 2-day CPT module. Also, Etiology of PTSD and Assessment of PTSD are recommended courses as prerequisites. This module may include DVD / video clips that could be distressing to some audience members.  Speaker will disclose this to the audience prior to the presentation. This module requires breakout sessions for participants to do role-plays, so room should be large enough to enough to allow a minimum of 8 inch separation between breakout groups of two participants each.
