Brief Description:

This presentation explores the bidirectional relationship between sleep and substance use disorders that clinicians may encounter in their practice. It will cover the prevalence rates of these disorders in the military population and discuss the effects of substance use on sleep regulation and parameters. After a review of how abnormal sleep can in turn impact the etiology and pathology of substance use disorders, providers will learn sleep-focused screening practices and gold standard treatment recommendations for patients with substance use disorders.

Note: This presentation can be presented face-to-face or as a webinar.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the prevalence of insomnia and sleep disorders experienced by military personnel
  2. Anticipate at least two adverse impacts of the presence of a sleep disorder on substance use pathology
  3. Interpret a sleep-focused screener in patients with substance abuse
