University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4)

UC4 Program

Overview

The UC4 is CDP’s University Counseling Center Core Competency program, which is a full-day presentation designed to address the social, cultural, clinical, and campus-specific concerns of service members and veterans. This program includes specific discussion of campus outreach and planning, and is appropriate for both clinical and non-clinical campus personnel.

Suggested Audience:

This course is designed for clinical mental health providers including counseling center staff psychologists and social workers, pre-doctoral interns, graduate-level externs, graduate-level clinical students, campus psychiatrists, disability services staff, local community providers, and regional community college providers. Non-clinical campus personnel can include individuals working in Student Affairs, Residence Life, Dean’s Office, academic advising, registrar’s office, Financial Aid, Campus Safety, or any other university department.

All practicing clinicians, trainees, and clinical students in a campus community are encouraged to attend the full day. Non‐clinical university personnel are encouraged to attend the full morning and through the Large Group Outreach Exercise.

Course Content:

Morning Program

  • Culture and Experience of Service Members and Veterans on Campus

  • The Deployment Cycle and its Impact on Students

  • Reintegration on Campus and Introduction to Outreach Efforts

Afternoon Program

  • Large Group Outreach Exercise
    Goal: Each institution will create their own specific campus plan

  • Clinical Conceptualizations and Workshop

  • Overview of Treatment for PTSD on Campus
    Introductions to:
    Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)
    Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Training goals include:

  1. Examine military/service member/veteran psychology as an area of multi-cultural diversity in order to provide competent outreach and treatment

  2. Identify deployment cycle stressors focused primarily on campus concerns and the student population

  3. Explain the concerns as they relate to recommendations for outreach programming and develop a basic outline for a campus-specific outreach plan (including needs, non-clinical services, clinical services, and administrative support)

  4. Recognize common presenting problems of service members and veterans, including depression, suicide, deployment-related insomnia, substance use, and TBI

  5. Demonstrate the basic behavioral etiology/framework and risk/prevalence of PTSD and gain knowledge of evidence-based treatments of PTSD including Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).

Continuing Education credits are commonly offered for licensed mental healthcare providers attending the program.

Location:

CDP personnel travel directly to universities in order to provide these trainings to the maximum number of counseling center staff and university personnel.

Cost:

Costs for the UC4 program are determined on a case by case basis in conjunction with program partners.
