CDP News: Apr. 29, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This week we were focused on internal matters, as most of the CDP was attending our annual All-Staff meeting. We’ve come up with some great plans for the future and are excited to get back to doing what we do best! Let’s see what’s coming up.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be back on the road, as we head to New York City to present as part of the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program. We also be holding a training on suicide prevention in Augusta, GA on Wednesday and Thursday for the SBHP program. For more information about this program or to find out how you can take part, click here.

If you’re interested in attending our next Regional Civilian One-Week training event, in Boise, ID 16-20 May, sign up soon as registration closes a week from Sunday. If you’d like to sign up or for more information, please click here.  We’re working to finalize the details for our 13-17 June event in Columbus, OH as well. Registration isn’t open yet, but If you would like to be emailed when registration begins, please complete the form here. These week-long events are great opportunities to learn about working with a military population or to increase your knowledge on a variety of military behavioral health fronts. We hope to see you at one of these!

Speaking of upcoming events, registration is currently available for May’s CDP Presents webinar, “Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Service Members and Veterans,” which will be held 11 May from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern. Dr. Andy Santenello and Dr. Matthew Sacks will lead this presentation. Everyone who signs up, attends and completes a post-event survey and evaluation will be eligible for one free CE. Our next two-day online training is 17-18 May and will be on suicide prevention. For more information about this event, please click here.

Dr. Diana Dolan’s Staff Perspective entry in the CDP Blog this week, “Confessions of a Military Brat” continues the theme of highlighting that April is the “Month of the Military Child.” Dr. Dolan discusses her own experiences growing up as a “military brat” and how they shaped her worldview, both as a child and even today. The Guest Perspective blog, “Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) in a VA Hospital Setting – Findings and Observances”, was by Dr. Jason Goodson. Dr. Goodson shares his extensive experience using PE to treat Veterans. He also includes the importance of confidence in PE and education in safety behaviors in successful treatment. There’s no Research Update this week, but it’ll be back on Thursday.

That’s all for this time around. We hope everyone has a great weekend. We’ll see you back again on Monday for the latest entry in our “By the Numbers” series!
