CDP News: Jan. 16, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This was a busy week on several fronts here at the CDP. We’re making up for lost time now that the holidays are over!

Registration for the next Prolonged Exposure Therapy training via Second Life is now open. This event will take place 5-6 February. One thing to note is the special time. It will run from 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. EST. It’s perfect for those on the west coast, who may have been unable to attend our other training events. Registration for this two-day training is $27 and comes with 13.5 CEUs. Space will be limited for this event. We expect this event to fill up, so if you’re interested in attending, we suggest signing up today!

This week we held our first, in a series of, quarterly online webinars. Dr. Paula Domenici and Laura Copland delivered a presentation on the topic of moral injury. If you missed it, we’ll be posting a recording of the event next week in the Learn Now section of the website. Our next webinar is scheduled for 8 April, when Dr. Diana Dolan will present on the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale or CAPS. We’ll be opening registration and posting the schedule for more of our CEU-eligible, quarterly webinars very soon!

That wasn’t the only training we had on the schedule this week. We were also in several locations across the country for our face-to-face events. We traveled to Fort Jackson, SC to present on suicide prevention in the military. Our Star Behavioral Health Providers team was in California delivering a Tier Two training. Also in California, we visited the University of San Francisco to present our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) course. Speaking of our UC4 program, next week we’ll be headed to both the University of Montana in Bozeman and the University of Texas in Tyler to present a two-day workshop on Prolonged Exposure therapy (PE) as part of our UC4-Extended program.

Laura Copland also wrote this week’s Staff Perspective column. It’s the second part of her series on Socratic Dialogue. In this entry she discusses how to use this technique to allow patients to open up to the actual truth, as opposed to their negative feelings and beliefs. It’s a very insightful piece that’s well-worth reading, if you missed it. Also, don’t forget to take a look at this week’s new Research Update. As always it’s packed with the latest news, articles and useful links and well-worth checking out.

That’s all we’ve got for this time around.  We hope everyone enjoys the holiday weekend. We’ll see you next week!
