CDP News: May 27, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’ve been busy this week, since next week will be shortened by Memorial Day on Monday.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we were in Michigan for the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program. Next Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be headed to Kokomo, IN for another SBHP event. For more information about this program or to find out how to get involved, click here. Also on Wednesday and Thursday, our trainers will be visiting Denton, TX to present a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training at the University of North Texas.

If you’re interested in attending our Regional Civilian One-Week training event in Columbus, OH, 13-17 June, there’s about a week left to sign up. Registration for this event will close on 5 June, so act fast! If you can’t make it to Columbus, don’t worry; we’re working on the details and locations of the remaining Regional Civilian One-Week training events for 2016. If you’d like to be notified via email about future iterations, please fill out this form.

Other upcoming events include our Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training via Second Life which will be held 22-23 June. We’ve also got Chronic Pain on 28 June and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) on 20-21 July, both of which will be held in Second Life, coming up.

Speaking of online event, registration is also available for the next CDP Presents event on 22 June, entitled “Reconceptualizing Resilience and Growth in the Wake of Trauma”. This webinar will be hosted by Dr. David Riggs and Dr. Kelly Chrestman. You can also watch recordings of our previous CDP Presents events here.

In the CDP blog this week, we paused to spotlight the fact that May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As many as one out of five Americans will be affected by a mental health condition in their lifetime. Despite the growing understanding of PTSD and other conditions, there is still much work to be done on educating the public and reducing the lingering stigma of mental health. This week’s Guest Perspective column was by Dr. Hsuemei Price, entitled “2015 – A Year of Transformation.” In it, Dr. Price discussed her experiences working with transgender patients, in both military and civilian settings. It’s well-worth a few minutes of your time. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s all for this time around. We’d like to remind everyone to take a few minutes this Memorial Day to reflect upon the sacrifices, both past and continuing, of our Service members and Veterans to ensure the safety and security of this country.
