Staff Perspective: Live Online PE Training

Staff Perspective: Live Online PE Training

Last week the Center for Deployment Psychology hosted the first ever (that we’re aware of) online training in Prolonged Exposure Therapy for continuing education credits. We’re very proud of our team of presenters and support staff that helped pull this off. Even more importantly, all of the participants in this training seemed to enjoy and get quite a bit out of it, judging from the post-training surveys we’ve already received.

This is a big milestone for CDP. We realize that there’s no way we can travel our trainers out to deliver in-person training to all of the behavioral health providers who would like to receive it. We don’t have the time, funding or sheer manpower to meet the volume of demand from providers. So we’ve been making a concerted effort to leverage technology to help further our mission of providing high-quality training to behavioral health professionals treating Service members, Veterans and their families.

The event last week was held over two full days using Adobe Connect teleconferencing software. In the weeks leading up to the event, we offered a series of hosted “open houses” in Connect. Participants were able to log into the room and interact with CDP staff with voice chat. This important pre-cursor to the event allowed users to get familiar with the presentation space and to work out any technical issues with their computers.

On the day of the event, we began at 9 a.m. EDT. Participants from across the country began logging in, from Alaska to just up the street from CDP HQ. Over the course of the next two days, Dr. Kevin Holloway, Dr. Kelly Chrestman and Dr. Bill Brim delivered an in-depth PE training in a virtual environment. All elements of a traditional, live PE training were included in the online version, including breakout groups and roleplay exercises to practice what participants had learned during the training.

With the overwhelming positive responses from both participants and staff, we’re going to be continuing to add more of these events to our training calendar. We’ve currently got another upcoming PE training event that will be held in Second Life. Although, this upcoming event has reached capacity and registration is closed, we encourage anyone that is interested in participating in an online training to keep an eye on our training page. We’ll be announcing additional online training opportunities very soon. As always, if you have any suggestions or ideas about specific training types or topics that you’d like to see the CDP offer, please feel free to drop us a line via the “Contact Us” link at the top of the screen or send an email to General@deploymentpsych.org
