CDP News: Aug. 14, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It was another busy week at CDP and next week looks like more of the same of coming up!

On Wednesday and Thursday, we were out in San Diego, CA for the Star Behavioral Health Providers program to provide a training on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). For more details about the SBHP program and the tiers of training, you can head to our SBHP webpage here. We also visited Lubbock, TX to present the UC4 program at Texas Tech University. For more information about the UC4 program, head over to the program page here.

We also held an online training via Second Life on Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy on Wednesday and Thursday via Second Life. It was a great event and we had attendees from all across the country and even some from overseas! That’s one of the best things about online training. It allows us to reach providers who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend these courses. We’re working hard to extend our training’s reach at the CDP. Due to the success and high demand in these online courses, we’re expanding our slate of offerings.  Next month, on 9-10 September, we’ll be offering an online workshop that focuses military suicide prevention, led by Dr. Sharon Birman

Even if you can’t devote two days to online training, we’ve got some webinars coming up that may be of interest to you. On 27 August, we’ll have a presentation on military culture, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Eastern. The webinar will be led by CDP’s Deputy Director, Dr. Bill Brim, and Dr. Patricia Watson from the National Center for PTSD. Then on 3 September, we will be hosting another CDP Presents webinar on the topic, led by Dr. Elizabeth Parins and Dr. Sharon Birman.

We’re preparing to open up registration for our upcoming Regional 1-Week Civilian training to be held in the Albany, NY metro area from 26-30 October. If you’d like to be notified via email when registration begins for this and future Regional 1-Week Civilian training events, please complete this form.

Finally, over in the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective entry was by Dr. Diana Dolan and features the second part of her entry on group CBT-I. After discussing the benefits of group CBT-I last time, this time around she discusses the logistics of setting up a successful group. Some of the details include patient selection, group size, documentation and more.  Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s it for this time around. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you back here on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” series.
