CDP News: Aug. 7, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’ve got tons of stuff coming up, so let’s get right to it!

First up, next week we’re headed to San Diego, CA on Tuesday and Wednesday  for the Star Behavioral Health Providers program to provide a training on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). For more details about the SBHP program and the tiers of training, you can head to our SBHP webpage here. We’ll also be in Lubbock, TX at Texas Tech University to present the UC4 program, which is designed to address the social, cultural, and campus-specific concerns of Service members and Veterans. It’s a great program. If you’d like to find out how to bring it to your local college or university, check out our UC4 page here.

Next week we will also be holding our latest online training, this time on Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy. It will be held on Wednesday and Thursday via Second Life. Registration for that event is closed, however we do have more online events coming up soon. First is our next monthly CDP Presents webinar, which will focus on military culture, and take place on 27 August from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Eastern. The webinar will be led by CDP’s Deputy Director, Dr. Bill Brim, and Dr. Patricia Watson from the National Center for PTSD.

We also have two online events that will focus on military suicide prevention. On 3 September, we will be hosting another CDP Presents webinar on the topic, led by Dr. Lisa French, Assistant Director of Military Training Programs at the CDP. Then on 9-10 September, there will be a two-day evidence-based workshop entitled “Addressing Suicidal Behavior in the U.S. Military: Strategies for Assessment, Crisis Intervention, and Treatment,” which will be held online via Second Life.

If you’re looking for some face-to-face training, registration is ongoing for the 2016 Military and Veteran Behavioral Health Certificate Program at Widener University in Exton, PA. This certificate program runs over the course of three weekends, beginning in March 2016. It is designed to aid providers in gaining knowledge and skills to address the emotional struggles and psychological health needs of Service members, Veterans, and their families. For more information or to register for this program, please click here.

Finally, over in the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective entry was by Dr. Diana Dolan and is called “In Support of Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia.” She discusses the value and benefits of CBT-I and also provides some suggestions for potential ways to help structure the group sessions. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s it for this time around. We you enjoy your weekend and come back to the CDP Blog on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” series.
