Description:
This intensive 2-day workshop will provide training for behavioral health providers in the fundamentals of cognitive behavioral therapy for depression (CBT-D), with a specific focus on working with service members and veterans. We will begin with a discussion of depression in the military, followed by an examination of the central principles of CBT-D. Based on this model, participants will then learn how to conceptualize depressed patients and organize the components of a standard CBT-D session. We will also highlight specific cognitive, behavioral, and problem-solving strategies to use with service members to help them modify unhelpful cognitions and re-engage with their environments.
Participants will have multiple opportunities to observe video examples and practice intervention strategies through interactive role plays. This program content focuses on the application of assessment and intervention methods for treating depressed patients that have consistent and credible empirical support in the scientific literature (Beck, 2020; Hays, 2019; Kazantzis et al., 2018; Patel et al., 2019; Yew et al., 2021). Participants must attend both days of the workshop.
Attendance Requirements:

If you are unfamiliar with Second Life, we HIGHLY recommend watching these brief orientation videos we have created to introduce Second Life to new participants.
Participants are also required to attend one of the pre-event "open houses" held online in Second Life. This is to ensure that participants can successfully log into Second Life, enter the training space, hear the presenter and speak with them via their computer's microphone. Participants will not need to attend for the entire "open house," just a portion of the two-hour window.
The scheduled times for the open houses are as follows:
- 10 July 2-4 p.m. Eastern
- 12 July 7-9 p.m. Eastern
- 21 July 2-4 p.m. Eastern
- 24 July, 1-3 p.m. Eastern
Participants will need to attend their open house session of choice from the computer and Internet connection they plan on using for the training. This is to ensure all technical issues can be solved in advance of the event.
Failure to attend one of the Open Houses will result in being disenrolled from the training.
***We recommend attending on a non-DoD computer network. Second Life is not permitted on networks or internet connections belonging to US military bases or the US Department of Veterans Affairs. In these instances, we encourage participants to use a home internet connection. Second Life is not compatible with Chromebooks, tablet computers, and mobile phones.
