Course information

Assessment and Treatment of Sleep Disturbances in Military Populations: Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders Online via Zoom

The Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP) is offering a half-day evidence-based online workshop on 21 June 2021, from 9:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Eastern, entitled "Assessment and Treatment of Sleep Disturbances in Military Populations: Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders." Registration for the course is $20 and comes with 4 Continuing Education (CE) credits. (Please note the refund policy and CE details at the bottom of the page.) Space in this event is limited and registration will close when capacity is reached, even if this is before the final registration deadline.

Description:
This half-day workshop builds on the foundation of sleep education provided in the two-day Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) workshop. Detailed instruction on circadian rhythm physiology provides an understanding of contributors to both normative patterns and development of disorders. We then explore assessment specific to circadian rhythm disorders and introduce clinical interventions for the two most common in Service members: Delayed Sleep Wake Phase Disorder and Shift Work Disorder. Step-by-step guidance illustrated by examples underscore recommended techniques. Participants are expected to have attended the CBT-I workshop or have sufficient training in CBT-I to complete this advanced course.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate the elements of behavioral, environmental, and physiological circadian rhythms.
2. Assess whether patients meet diagnostic criteria for Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorder subtypes.
3. Perform an assessment of sleep behavior that utilizes recommended circadian rhythm measures.
4. Plan a course of treatment for Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder incorporating Dim Light Melatonin Onset (DLMO) and minimum core body temperature.
5. Manage rapidly rotating shift work with strategies to address fixed or long term rotating shift work.

System Requirements:
This course will be presented via Zoom teleconferencing software. Participants will not have to install any additional programs on their computer to take part. However, a web browser is necessary. (Mac users are recommended to use the Chrome or Firefox browsers to minimize tech issues). Participants can test their computer's capabilities by clicking here (or visiting http://zoom.us/test). We recommend all participants test their ability to load Zoom in advance of the event to ensure there are no technical difficulties. All participants must log in via an individual connection, rather than as a group using one machine. A headset/headphones are recommended.
