Course information

Understanding military culture and the ways military service and deployments impact couples is critical when providing counseling to military-connected clients.

The Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) now offers webinars which are specially designed to support clinicians who provide couples counseling to this population. This module will be held from 3-5 p.m. EASTERN on 27 February 2020. Each module incorporates research, best clinical practices and interactive activities.  The courses are stand-alone and participants can take one or all four depending on their interest. Individual courses are $10 each or participants can register for all four courses at a discounted rate of $35 by clicking here. Please note, space in this event is limited. Registration will close once all seats are filled, even if this is before the final registration date.

Description: This training provides active duty and civilian mental health providers with an overview of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) with military-connected clients. First, we will examine data regarding the prevalence of IPV. A review of the literature on the intersection of IPV and military culture will also be presented, along with key assessment elements, important questions to ask, and screening tools that can be used. Finally, we will review programs and resources available to prevent and respond to IPV with this population.

To access the course, on the day of the event, log into your account here: https://deploymentpsych.ce21.com/Account/MyAccount and click on the green "Launch Webinar" button.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discriminate between health, unhealthy, and abusive dynamics in intimate partner relationships
  2. Explore the programs that exist to address intimate partner violence with military-connected clients

System Requirements:
This course will be presented via Zoom teleconferencing software. Zoom is browser-based, however an add-in may need to be installed before attending. Participants can test their computer's capabilities by clicking here (or visiting https://zoom.us/test). We recommend those using Internet connections on government or military locations test their ability to load Zoom in advance of the event to ensure there are no technical difficulties. Microphones and webcams are not necessary, but you will need a computer with working speakers or headphones. If you encounter connection difficulties when using your computer, the Zoom app is also available for iOS and Android devices.
