Description: This intensive two-day module provides training in Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy, an evidence-based treatment for PTSD described in the manual, Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD – Therapist Guide, 2nd Edition, by Foa et al., 2019. It covers the empirical and theoretical support for PE and reviews the main clinical techniques used in this structured protocol. Step-by-step instructions for conducting PE therapy sessions, including in vivo and imaginal exposure, along with strategies for working with over- and under-engaged patients and other difficult cases, are shared. Videotaped examples of PE cases are used to demonstrate therapist skills. Participants are expected to do role-plays in class to practice PE techniques, and they must attend both days.
Participants will be required to have a Second Life account and install the Second Life viewer on their computer. Those who do not have a Second Life account can sign up and download the viewer here: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/. Click the gold "Join Now" at the top of the page to create an account and click the "Download the SL Viewer" button to get the Second Life viewer.
If you are unfamiliar with Second Life, we HIGHLY recommend watching these brief orientation videos we have created to introduce Second Life to new participants.
Participants are also required to attend one of the pre-event "open houses" held online in Second Life. This is to ensure that participants can successfully log into Second Life, enter the training space, hear the presenter and speak with them via their computer's microphone. Participants will not need to attend for the entire "open house," just a portion of the two-hour window. Participants must attend this "open house" session from the computer and Internet connection they intend to use for the training.
Not attending an "open house" session will result in disenrollment from the course.
The open house sessions will be as follows:
- Wednesday, 9 February, 7-9 p.m. Eastern
- Tuesday, 15 February, 2-4 p.m. Eastern
- Friday, 18 February, 1-3 p.m. Eastern
- Tuesday, 22 February, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Eastern.
Attendees are also responsible for acquiring a copy of the required text for this workshop, Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD, Emotional Processing of Traumatic Experiences Therapist Guide, 2nd edition, by Foa, Hembree, Rothbaum, and Rauch (2019), published by Oxford University Press [ISBN: 978-0190926939].
It is available in print and electronic versions, and may be purchased from a number of vendors. The following links are provided for convenience only, and CDP does not endorse any specific vendor.
Please note: While this workshop will cover the same content as our face-to-face training workshops for Prolonged Exposure, attendance at CDP PE training events does not count toward certification in PE in the Veterans Health Administration (VA).
If you participate in the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program and want to register for this online EBP workshop, please note that it will not qualify as an SBHP Tier 3. While you are welcome to attend the training, your participation will not be tracked by SBHP, nor listed on the SBHP registry.
