CDP will be hosting a 90-minute webinar entitled "Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Service Members and Veterans." Dr. Jacob Eleazer (he/him) will provide participants with an overview of the current and historical policy context for transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive (TNBGE) U.S. Service members and veterans and discuss implications for affirming clinical, advocacy, and research practice. Participants will learn about the impact of community organizing and advocacy efforts led by TNBGE community members and allies on health care service delivery and health policies.
This workshop will identify harms perpetuated by healthcare providers and systems and clarify the role of healthcare professionals as advocates in both clinical settings and in the broader arenas of public health policy and research to improve access to care for TNBGE Service members and veterans. Participants will learn specific skills for assessing and disrupting the impact of healthcare discrimination, microaggressions, and other minority stressors on TNBGE persons’ wellbeing, clinical presentation, and engagement in care. Participants will also learn strategies for self-assessment and techniques to minimize the impact of cisnormativity, cissexism, and internalized transphobia on their clinical practice, research, and advocacy efforts.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will:
- Analyze two recent examples of healthcare discrimination that impacted TNBGE Service Members’ and Veterans’ trust and engagement in mental healthcare.
- Assess the impact of minority stressors (i.e., healthcare discrimination) on clinical outcomes and experiences in TNBGE persons.
- Develop a plan to address two common microaggressions/cultural ruptures that commonly occur during clinical interactions with TNBGE Service members and veterans.
