Best Practices in Intervention for Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Description:
This training offers health care providers an opportunity to develop an enhanced understanding of the current literature on best practices in principles of intervention as well as delivery of evidence-based practices in the context of youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Each individual with ASD has a unique profile of strengths and needs, and youth with ASD often experience additional co-occurring behavioral health and/or medical conditions. This training reviews how development of intervention plans must be tailored to the individual and designed in consideration of principles such as risk and protective factors, the need to collaborate across systems, factors influencing feasibility, and individual and family needs, preferences, and culture.

In addition, the training provides an overview of evidence-based approaches to address the array of possible needs while building on the individual’s strengths. A case study is utilized to clarify how principles of intervention impact practice and how goals and intervention selection come together to comprehensively support a youth with ASD. The training is helpful both to providers engaged in direct care with youth with ASD as well as those in a position to make referrals for services.
