CDP News: 22 December 2018
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We're down to the last few days of the year, but there's plenty coming up in 2019.
Our first online training of 2019 will be our CDP Presents webinar "Blueprints for Suicide Treatment in the Military: The Lost Art of Case Conceptualization." It will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern on 15 January. Presenters will define two types of case conceptualization and identify how case conceptualizations are relevant for suicide-focused psychotherapeutic treatment. Through the use of a hypothetical patient example, the presenters will demonstrate how case conceptualizations can be used to prioritize treatment targets for suicidal military-connected individuals. The patient example will highlight some suicide risk factors and life circumstances specific to military service members and military culture. Participants who attend will be eligible to receive one free CE upon successful completion of a post-training assessment and knowledge evaluation.
Next up will be "Assessing Clients for Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder." It will be held on 17 January from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern. This workshop will review a method for screening, assessment, and treatment outcome monitoring of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) centered on the use of the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL5). Participants will be introduced to VA/DOD best practices for diagnosing military-related PTSD including screening for trauma-related disorders, obtaining thorough military and trauma histories, conducting a semi-structured diagnostic interview, and using self-report measures to track treatment outcome. Unfortunately, we've reached capacity for January’s Prolonged Exposure (PE) training via Second Life on 24-25 January. However, registration is available for our Suicide Prevention training coming up on 4-5 February. Registration for this event is $45 and comes with 13.5 CEs. December's EBP training event which was also held in Zoom filled up quickly, so we anticipate this one will most likely sell out as well. So if you are intersted in attending, we suggest signing up soon!
Also coming up in February, the next round of CDP’s Couples Webinar Series is available for sign-ups. The series now consists of four two-hour webinars which will be held from 7-9 p.m. Eastern every Tuesday in February. The course topics are “Military and Veteran Couples: Elements of the Assessment Process,” “Military and Veteran Couples: Evidence-Based Approaches to Treatment,” “An Intervention Model for Working with Military Couples Who Have Experienced Infidelity,” and “Intimate Partner Violence: An Overview of Assessment and Response with Military-Connected Clients.” Tuition for each individual course is $18 or all four courses can be purchased as a bundle for $60. It's the last one of the year, but the Research Update will be back in full force after the holidays.
