CDP News: Sept. 20, 2013

It's the end of the week and that means it's once again time for CDP News, where we take a look at recent news in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, as well as looking ahead to upcoming events. We've been running our military-oriented Topics in Deployment Psychology course all this week. It's been keeping us quite busy, but we're not done yet though! We've still got another three days to go next week before we wrap this session up. Things have been going well and we're looking forward to getting back to it on Monday.

Today is the second and final day of our University Counseling Center Core Competency Extended program out in Seattle at the University of Washington. This time around we're teaching a session on Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE).

Turning to our civilian training side, our one-week training event, "Addressing the Psychological Health of Warriors and Their Families," has two separate sessions that are currently open for interested individuals to register for. The first is going to be held in San Diego, CA, October 7 through 11. If you're interested in attending this session, you should act quickly, as registration for this event closes next Friday. The second upcoming event will be held in Reno, NV, October 28 through November 1. Registration for that event closes on October 20. Both of these sessions will provide instruction on evidence-based therapies, with the San Diego training focusing on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), while the Reno event will feature Prolonged Exposure (PE) training. Either session is a great opportunity for behavioral health providers who are interested in learning how to work with military personnel or expanding on their existing skills.

This week's Staff Voices column was from Dr. Regina Shillinglaw. In it she took a look at the documentary "The Bridge," using a clinician's perspective for an interesting and insightful look at an already powerful film. It's certainly worth a read if you missed it this week. While you're on the blog, take a few minutes to check out this week's Research Update as well, which is packed with the latest journal articles, news and links from around the Web.

That it for this week. Have a great weekend and we'll see you next week!
