CDP News: Apr. 25, 2014
Happy Friday and welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It’s been another busy week around here at the CDP. The University Counseling Center Core Competency program was in Manhattan, KS yesterday to present at Kansas State University. We held two separate Star Behavioral Health Providers events, one in Indiana and another out in California.
On top of all of that, we’re also gearing up for next week’s eight-day long Topics in Deployment Psychology course, running from 28 April through 7 May. Organizing eight days of training is a lot of work and that’s compounded by the logistics of brining in uniformed behavioral health providers from all of the services and from around the country. It’s a lot of work! However, it is well-worth the effort and we’re always happy to do it.
Also, on the training front, we’ve heard the demand loud and clear for more live online training events. The first two Prolonged Exposure events reached capacity very quickly. The Adobe Connect session received very high marks across the board, so we’re going to do another training in that venue. Instead of PE, this time around we’re going to hold a Cognitive Processing Therapy training. The event is tentatively scheduled for 10-11 July. We’ll be posting more details and registration information very soon. Keep an eye on our training calendar, Facebook, and Twitter feeds to stay up to date on all of the latest information on our upcoming training events.
We’re also proud to announce the release of the first module in our brand new free, self-paced eLearning course, “Rates of Psychological Health Issues in U.S. Military Populations”. This unit focusses on understanding the data as a whole and how it is collected. Future sections of this course will cover Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, TBI, Sleep Disturbance, Suicidal Behavior, Substance Abuse and more.
As always, if you missed the weekly Research Update, you’ll want to circle back around and check that out. It’s a great summary of recent journal articles, relevant news and useful links from all around the Web.
Finally, we also added a new podcast this week. In it, Dr. Paula Domenici discusses parents of Service members. They have their own unique set of challenges to overcome when supporting their uniformed children. It’s an important topic that is often overlooked by many. Head over to our Podcasts section to give it (or any of the other available recordings) a listen.
That’s all for now. Have a great weekend everyone and we’ll see you in a couple of weeks!
