CDP News: Feb. 20, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This was an extra-short week for us, with the holiday compounded by weather difficulties on Tuesday. This just kept us extra busy making up for lost time!

On Wednesday and Thursday we held our latest Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) training via Adobe Connect. These events have proven to be quite popular and an effective way of providing training.  We’re continuing to expand our online offerings to expand our reach to participants who would otherwise be unable to attend. Our next scheduled online event will be a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training presented via Second Life. It will run 2-3 April. Registration for this event will open on Monday. If you’d like to be notified via email when registration opens for this and future events, you can sign up for our online events list here.

Next week we’ll be back on the road, the Star Behavioral Health Providers program will be sending our training to Los Alimitos, CA and Richmond, IN. For more information on the states participating in this program and the various training tiers, check out the SBHP section of the website.

We’re down to the last two weeks to sign up for our Southwest Regional Civilian 1-Week Training.  The event will be held in Phoenix, AZ from 16-20 March. This week-long training includes numerous training sessions taught by CDP subject matter experts and a choice of two tracks, the first is on PTSD treatment and the other focuses on health psychology and sleep disorders. For more information on this great training, you can click here to see the agenda. Registration is $95 and there are more than 30 CEUs available during the program. Seats are limited in this training.

This week’s Staff Perspective column is by Dr. Diana Sermanian. In it, she examines a recent article on chronic pain. The article explores Service members’ experiences with chronic pain. This is a vital topic, as over half of the Service members returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan report having chronic pain issues. Also, don’t forget to take a look at this week’s new Research Update. As always it’s packed with the latest news, articles and useful links and well-worth checking out.

If you’re interested in learning more about military culture, we suggest checking out the four-module Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals. This self-paced online course is designed to help providers gain an understanding of the importance of and breadth of military culture. Each of the four modules in the course is eligible for two CEU credits upon completion of the final exam.

That’s it for this time around. We hope it’s warm, wherever you are out there! Join us back here next week for a new entry in our By the Numbers column.
