CDP News: Sept.25, 2015
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It was another busy week here at the CDP and we’ve got plenty more coming up, so let’s dive right in.
On Wednesday the University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) team visited Joliet, IL to present at the University of St. Francis. Next up, we’ll be headed to Norwich, CT to deliver the course at Three Rivers Community College on 14 October. If you’d like to learn more about the UC4 program, including how you can bring us to your local college or university, visit the program’s page here.
Speaking of upcoming events, our next Regional Civilian One-Week Training event will be held in the Albany, NY-metro area from 26-30 October. Registration for the event is $95 and includes up to 34 CE credits. The five-day training will have a variety of modules on topics such as military culture, the deployment cycle, sleep disorders, working with military families, as well as training in Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy. This is the perfect opportunity for providers who are looking to begin working with a military-audience or those who wish to increase their knowledge and comfort-level. If you can’t make it to this one, but would like to be emailed when registration for future Regional One-Week Civilian Training opportunities, please complete the form here.
We’re well aware that many providers simply aren’t able to travel to attend CDP training events in person. With that in mind, we’re happy to offer online training events as a possible solution to this issue. Our next two-day evidence-based psychotherapy training will be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) on 15-16 October. This training will be held via Second Life and will cover the fundamentals of CBT-D with regards to working with Service members and Veterans. The course will also include 13.5 CEs. We will also be presenting an online training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia on 5-6 November. Registration for this event will be opening very soon!
Over in the CDP blog, this week’s Staff Perspective column by Jenny Phillips, entitled “Yours, Mine, Ours…and the Military? Experiencing Deployment as a Blended Family”. In it she talks about her own personal experience when her husband was deployed, leaving her with a brand new family and set of responsibilities. Military families come in all shapes and sizes and this entry is a great example of that. It’s always interesting to hear about how others have been able to adapt and overcome the challenges that accompany being a part of a military family. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.
That’s all for now. We hope everyone enjoys the weekend rejoins us here on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column!
