CDP News: Apr. 8, 2016
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. The first full week of April was another busy one and there’s plenty more on the horizon.
Our team spent the week in Des Moines, IA to hold our latest session of the Regional Civilian One-Week Training program. It was another great event. Thanks to all of our trainers, staff and especially participants! If you weren’t able to make it to Des Moines, we’ve got two more opportunities to attend our One-Week program on the calendar. First, we’ll be headed to Boise, ID from 16-20 May. If you’d like to sign up, registration for this event is currently live and available here. Following that, on 13-17 June, we’ll in Columbus, OH. We’re still finalizing the details for that event, but if you would like to be emailed when registration opens, please complete the form here.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday, we’ll be in Columbia, SC and on Wednesday and Thursday in Lansing, MI, as part of the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program. The SBHP program is a continuing education program designed to enhance behavioral health providers’ scope of knowledge and skills for treating Service members, Veterans and their families. It’s a really great program. For more information or to find out if it’s available in your state, head over to our SBHP page here.
In addition to our in-person events, we’ll be holding a two-day training in Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy in Second Life next Thursday and Friday. Registration for this event has closed, but we’ve got several online events coming up. The next CDP Presents webinar will be held on 20 April, entitled “Deploying in Response to an Infection Disease Outbreak: The Impact on Service Member Mental Health”, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern, led by Dr. Amy Adler and Dr. Ann Dobmeyer. Registration is also available for our “Addressing Suicidal Behavioral in the U.S. Military: Strategies for Assessment, Crisis Intervention, and Treatment,” online event, which will be held 17-18 May via Second Life.
Over in the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective was by Dr. Andrew Santanello, entitled “Should I be Teaching Veterans to Meditate?” In it, Dr. Santanello discusses his experiences with mindfulness-based training. It’s the first of a two-part entry, so stay tuned for the upcoming follow-up. The Guest Perspective blog, “Solving Problems Can Enhance Resilience and Improve Adjustment”, was by Dr. Arthur Nezu. Dr. Nezu describes Problem-Solving Therapy (PST) and how it can improve recovery and increase resilience in Service members and Veterans. Also, don’t forget to check out the Research Update as usual, it’s got all the latest news, articles, and useful links related to deployment psychology.
That’s all for this time around. We hope the weather is nice enough for you to get out and enjoy the weekend. We’ll see you back here next week for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” feature!
