CDP News: May 13, 2016
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. May is shaping up to be a very busy month around here. We’ve got lots of things on the horizon, so let’s get to it!
All next week, we’ll be presenting our next Regional Civilian One-Week training event, in Boise, ID 16-20 May. If you missed out on that one, fear not! Registration is up and running for our 13-17 June event in Columbus, OH as well. These events are designed for civilians interested in working with a military audience or those who would like to begin doing so. If you’re interested in more information or you’d like to sign up, click here. Up to 34 CEs are available for the courses in this program. If you’d like to be notified about future iterations of the One-Week Civilian Training program, please complete the form here.
Then on Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be in New Paltz, NY to present as part of the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program. We also be holding a second SBHP training event in Bloomington, IN on Wednesday and Thursday. For more information about this program or to find out how to get involved, click here.
In the online arena, we’ll be holding a training on suicide prevention in Second Life on Tuesday and Wednesday. We also just opened up registration for our next online two-day EBP, on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), which will be held 22-23 June.
Last Wednesday we had May’s CDP Presents webinar, “Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Service Members and Veterans,” led by Dr. Andy Santenello and Dr. Matthew Sacks. It was a very informative event with over 200 participants! If you missed it, we’ll be posting a recording of the presentation in the next week or so. Keep an eye on our CDP Presents section. While you’re there, you can also sign up for 22 June’s event, “Reconceptualizing Resilience and Growth in the Wake of Trauma”. Dr. David Riggs and Dr. Kelly Chrestman will be presenting that one.
Speaking of Dr. Santanello, in addition to leading the CDP Presents webinar, he also wrote this week’s Staff Perspective column. It’s the second part of his series on “Should I be Teaching Veterans to Mediate”. He offers some important considerations to think about when deciding if you should offer mindfulness to your clients. The Guest Perspective blog, “Behavioarl Health Consultation in Primary Care – Core Skills for Any Military Psychologist”, was by Dr. Katie Kanzler. In it, Dr. Kanzler talks about how her time spent in a primary care environment helped strengthen her abilities as a psychologist in a deployed environment. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful link from around the Web..
That’s all for this time around. It’s Friday the 13th, so make sure you take extra care out there. We’ll see you back again on Monday for the latest entry in our “By the Numbers” series!
