CDP News: Feb. 17, 2017

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. Next week will be a shortened week, with the President’s Day holiday on Monday, but there’s still plenty to talk about.

First up, on Tuesday, from noon to 1:30 Eastern, we’ll hold our next CDP Presents webinar entitled “Chicken & Eggs: Treatment Order in Cases of Co-Morbid PTSD and Insomnia.” Dr. Diana Dolan and Dr. Carin Lefkowitz will address potential approaches for clinicians to use when treating patients with co-morbid PTSD and Insomnia Disorder. Then on Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be present a Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) training via Second Life. Registration for this event has sold out. However, registration for our next upcoming event, the 22-23 March online suicide prevention training, also in Second Life, is now available.

We’re also excited to announce a new addition to our online Military Culture training section. A new self-paced eLearning course, entitled “Military Culture in Primary Care” is now available. This course is designed to inform primary care providers on military culture and offer them specific screening tools to work with Veterans. It’s an important course and we’re quite happy to have it available for the public. Like the other modules in the Military Culture sections, participants who complete the course and fill out a short post-training survey/evaluation, will be eligible for one free CE credit. If you haven’t already looked at the existing modules, you should certainly spend some time on them as well.

Registration is filling up for the upcoming Regional Civilian One-Week Training. This training will be held from 13-17 March in the Las Vegas-metro area. For registration details, agenda, and more information, head over to the event page here. IF you can’t make it to Nevada, don’t worry! We’re working on finalizing other dates and locations for the remaining iterations of the course in 2017. You can opt-in for more information about these by completing the form here.

On the CDP Blog this week, Dr. Regina Shillinglaw examined a study on the importance of self-forgiveness in moral injury and suicide. The study, entitled “Self-forgiveness, post-traumatic stress, and suicide attempts among military personnel and veterans,” specifically looks at self-forgiveness as a protective factor to reduce the risk of suicide. Speaking of research, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s all for this edition of CDP News. Enjoy the holiday weekend, but don’t forget to check back with us next week for plenty more content and news!
