CDP News: 27 April 2018

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We're in the final days of April and our Sleep Spotlight month.

As part of this spotlight, our latest CDP Presents webinar on Wednesday was "Sleep Disorder Care in the Military". It featured a panel of civilian and military sleep experts explaining the role and treatment services of different disciplines in the management of sleep disorders in the military, discussing the state of the research regarding behavioral treatments for insomnia such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy of Insomnia (CBTI) and Brief Behavioral Treatment of Insomnia (BBTI). If you missed it, don't worry! We'll be posting a recording of the event to the CDP Presents section of our website next week.

Instead of the usual CDP Presents webinar, next month we’re doing something a little different. Throughout May we'll be holding weekly hour-long webinars as part of our “Forces for Health: Warrior Wednesday” series. The goal of the series is to bring healthcare disciplines together to discuss culturally-informed, multi-disciplinary care and wellness for our Armed Forces members and Veterans across the lifespan. The first one will be "Moral Injury: Healing the Spiritual Injuries of War" and will be held on Wednesday, 2 May, from noon to 1 p.m. Eastern. As with our CDP Presents events, participants who attend and successfully complete a post-training survey/knowledge evaluation will receive one free CE. For more information or to register, please click here.

Today is the second day of our new training event, Brief Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia via Adobe Connect. This 1.5 day workshop provides introductory training in the brief assessment and treatment of Insomnia Disorder within a military primary care setting. We've been very excited to launch this one and we look forward to presenting it again over the summer. Speaking of upcoming events, next month, we'll be presenting a Prolonged Exposure (PE) Training via Second Life on 15-16 May. Registration is $45 and comes with 13.5 CE credits. All our currently scheduled events can be found on our upcoming training calendar. If you would like to be notified by email of upcoming online events, you can also sign up by completing the form here.

As mentioned, this is the final few days of our April Sleep Spotlight. We’ve put together a chunk of content around sleep and sleep issues. This content includes a series of infographics, blog entries, videos, and more. We'll be archiving the page to keep the content available in the future as well.

CDP's Dr. David Reynolds took a look at a military audience that's particularly affected by the lack of sleep in his Staff Perspective piece, "Sleep Among Special Duty Personnel." In it, Dr. Reynolds talked with several other providers about what they see as primary issues and how to effectively treat this population. Also, as always, don’t forget to check out this week's Research Update, with the latest news, journal articles, and useful links from around the Web.

Have a great weekend. We hope the weather is nice enough for you to get out and enjoy it, where ever you may be! We'll see you next week for more.
