CDP News: 29 September 2017

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. September is just about over and fall is well underway, but a change of seasons isn't slowing us down.

On Thursday, we opened up the application process for next year's "Summer Institute: Preparing for a Career in the Armed Forces" program. Applications will be accepted through 22 January 2018. This program was created in 2015 to to raise doctoral students’ awareness of what it would be like to serve as a psychologist in the Armed Forces and increase their competitiveness for a military internship. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about a career in military psychology and has been very successful over the past few years. For more information about the program and the requirements to participate, visit the Summer Institute page.

On Wednesday, we held the third of our weekly webinars in September intended to spotlight suicide awareness. Greg Brown, Ph.D., presented "The Safety Planning Intervention for Reducing Suicide Risk". We'll be posting a recording of Dr. Brown's webinar today along with supplemental questions that he didn't have time to address during the original event. As a reminder, we've also got videos of the first two presentation as well, "Suicide Risk Assessment" and "Veteran Suicide Data and VA Prevention Programs".

This Wednesday we'll be holding the last of our four-part series of webinars focused on suicide. It will be entitled “Means Restriction and Talking to Suicidal Veterans About Firearms” and be presented by Dr. Craig Bryan from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern. As a reminder, CDP will be teaming up with Cohen Veterans Network to offer free CEs to attendees. All participants who attend and successfully complete a post-training survey/evaluation will be eligible to receive one free CE credit. Also, if you've missed any of the previous events in September, we've posted recordings of all of them in the CDP Presents section of our website.

Speaking of upcoming online events, next Friday will be the final day to register for the next online EBP. Coming up on 12-13 October, we'll be back in Second Life for a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) training. Registration will also open next week for the 14-15 November Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) presented in Second Life. All our currently scheduled events can be found on our upcoming training calendar. If you would like to be notified when registration begins for any upcoming online event, you can sign up by completing the form here.

This week's Staff Perspective was entitled "Preparing Spiritual Leaders to Provide Culturally Informed Care" by Jenna Ermold.  In this blog entry, Dr. Ermold talks about the new online course, available in the Military Culture section of our website, which features a panel of expert chaplains with DoD and VA experience discussing how military culture can influence military-connected congregation members. Also, don't forget to check out this week's Research Update. It's packed with all the latest news, journal articles, and useful links from around the Web.

That’s it for this week. We'll see everyone on Monday for a new entry in our By the Numbers column!
