CDP News: Dec. 18, 2015
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. The next week couple of weeks are going to be pretty slow due to the approaching holidays, but we had a few things happening this week to talk about.
We did a bit of traveling for the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program this week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we were at Ball State in Indiana and then on Wednesday and Thursday, we were in Michigan to provide training for the SBHP program. This week we also presented in Second Life for our latest Prolonged Exposure training event on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was a full house and these online events are becoming more and more popular. Our January Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training event has already reached capacity and we’ve been forced to close off registration. However, our 10-11 February event on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) via Second Life is still available for registration. Speaking of online events, we’ve also open up registration for our monthly CDP Presents event on 13 January. The topic will be “The Acquisition and Role of Resilience for the Warrior.” This webinar will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. and will be led by Laura Copland. We’re still working on finalizing the CE credit info, but we anticipate that participants will be eligible for one free CE upon completion of the post-event evaluation and survey.
The final deadline for applications for the second iteration of the CDP's Summer Institute: Preparing for a Military-Focused Career is rapidly approaching. All applications must be received by 31 December. This five-day course is for doctoral students in clinical or counseling psychology who anticipate applying for a military internship. If you’re interested or if you know someone else who might be, don’t forget to send in those applications quickly!
In the CDP Blog this week, Dr. Regina Shillinglaw examined suicide and its associated stigma. She examined a recent article in which the authors discussed their own personal experiences with family members who had committed suicide and the accompanying feelings of shame and embarrassment. Despite all of the efforts to reduce the stigma of suicide, it is still quite prevalent and is a significant barrier in discussing the important topic of suicide. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update, which is the final edition of the year. As usual, it’s got all the latest news, articles, and useful links related to deployment psychology.
