CDP News: Feb. 27, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’ve made it through February and are gearing up to go into March with a full head of steam.

To support the Star Behavioral Health Providers Program, we sent trainers out to Los Alimitos, CA and Richmond, IN. For more information on the states participating in this program and the various training tiers, check out the SBHP section of the website. Our University Counseling Center Core Competency program will be headed to the College of Charleston in South Carolina to present a Prolonged Exposure (PE) training on Wednesday and Thursday as part of the UC4-E.

This is the final week to sign up for our Southwest Regional Civilian 1-Week Training.  Registration will end at close of business on Friday, 6 March. The event will be held in Phoenix, AZ from 16-20 March. This five-day event includes numerous training sessions taught by CDP subject matter experts and a choice of two tracks, the first is on PTSD treatment and the other focuses on health psychology and sleep disorders. If you’d like to see all of the available breakout sessions, the agenda is available for viewing here. Registration is $95 and there are more than 30 CEUs available during the program. Seats are limited in this training.

If you’re unable to travel to attend one of our training events, our online training may be for you. Our next scheduled online event will be a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training presented via Second Life. It will run 2-3 April. Registration for this event will open next week. If you’d like to be notified via email when registration opens for this and future events, you can sign up for our online events list here.

This week’s Staff Perspective column is by Dr. Brandy Hellman. In it, she talks about the importance of the therapeutic relationship between provider and patient. Most behavioral health providers know that creating a relationship with their clients is important, but Dr. Hellman shares a story from her own experience that illustrates just how vital this relationship can be. Also, don’t forget to take a look at this week’s new Research Update. As always it’s packed with the latest news, articles and useful links and well-worth checking out.

If you’re interested in learning more about military culture, we suggest checking out the four-module Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals. This self-paced online course is designed to help providers gain an understanding of the importance of and breadth of military culture. Each of the four modules in the course is eligible for two CEU credits upon completion of the final exam.

That’s it for this time around. Enjoy the weekend everyone and join us back here next week for a new entry in our By the Numbers column.
