CDP News: June 26, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We had a lot to squeeze in this week, since next week will be shortened by the holiday. So let’s get to it!

This week we sent trainers across the country for the Star Behavioral Health Providers program. On Wednesday and Thursday, CDP staff were in San Diego, CA and New Paltz, NY to provide training at these events. For more details about the SBHP program and the tiers of training, you can head to our SBHP webpage here.

Then on Thursday, our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program presented at Southeast Missouri State University. For more information on the UC4 program or to find out how to bring it to your local college or university, please visit the UC4 section of our website here.

We’ve started ramping up for our next Regional 1-Week Civilian Training program. These five-day training events are great for providers looking to enhance and expand their skills in working with a military population. The next event that will be open for public registration will be held in the Albany, NY metro-area from 26-30 October. We’ll be opening registration for this event early July. So keep an eye out for it.

In the online arena, our next virtual training will take place next week. The CPT via Second Life will be held on Wednesday and Thursday. While registration for this course has closed, soon we’ll be opening sign-ups for a Prolonged Exposure training in Second Life that will be held on 12-13 August. If you’d like to be emailed when registration for our online events begins, you can sign up for our online events email list here.

Registration for our next upcoming CDP Presents webinar, entitled “Women in the Military”, is currently open. This free webinar will be held on 28 July from 1-2:30 p.m. Eastern. There will be an hour of instruction, followed by a question-and-answer period. Participants who register and attend this event are eligible for one free Continuing Education Unit.

Another option for free CEUs is to check out the four-module Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals. This self-paced online course is designed to help providers gain an understanding of the importance of and breadth of military culture. Each module in the course is eligible for two CEU credits upon completion of the final exam, for a total of eight possible credits.

Finally, over in the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective entry was by Dr. Marjorie Weinstock. In it she discussed the common structural elements of a CBT for Depression therapy session. She provides a breakdown of each of the seven major components and talks about why each is important for both the patient and therapist. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s it for this time around. Enjoy the weekend and we’ll see you next time around with a new entry in our “By the Numbers” series.
