CDP News: Sep. 13, 2013

Happy Friday everyone! It’s the end of the week and that means it’s time for another edition of CDP News, where we take a look at the latest happenings and upcoming events at the Center For Deployment Psychology. We start this week’s roundup announcing our newest 1-Week Civilian Training to be held 28 October through 1 November in Reno, NV. This is in addition to our existing week-long event in San Diego, CA that will run 7-11 October. Registration for both of these events is open now for all interested behavioral health providers. These events offer great opportunities for providers to enhance their skills and knowledge on working with a military population.

Our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program continues to stay busy as well. This week we brought the UC4-extended program to Penn State University for a two-day training session on Cognitive Processing Therapy. Next Thursday we’re headed off to Seattle for another two-day training event at the University of Washington, which will be on Prolonged Exposure Therapy. We’ve got several other UC4 and UC4-e events coming up in the next few months. Visit our UC4 training section for more information about the program, upcoming opportunities or to see how you can bring the UC4 to a college or university near you.

Next week we’ll also be kicking off the latest iteration of our eight-day, military-oriented Topics in Deployment Psychology training. We’ll be bringing in a group of almost 40 interns, providers and social workers from various services for eight days of intensive training at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. The training will include lectures and group/panel discussions by CDP staff members as well as invited guest lecturers. It’s shaping up to be a busy couple of weeks ahead!

The Staff Voices column on our blog focused on the importance of provider self-care. Dr. Laura Cho-Stutler talked with Dr. Erica H. Wise, Clinical Professor and Director of Psychological Services at the University of North Carolina, about the “how-tos” of provider self-care. Take a few minutes to check it out if you missed it. Also, don’t forget to take a look at the weekly Research Update for the latest news, journal articles and useful links from all around the Web.

That’s it for this time around. Hopefully, everyone will make it through this Friday the 13th unscathed and join us back here next week for a brand-new entry in our By the Numbers series. Have a great weekend all!
