CDP News: Sept. 11, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It was a shorter week due to the Labor Day holiday, but we still managed to squeeze in several events this week.

As part of our efforts to spotlight National Suicide Prevention Month, we held our first online two-day military suicide prevention training via Second Life this week. We had a group of very engaged participants who made it an excellent event. We’re really looking forward to holding it again. Our next two-day evidence-based psychotherapy training will be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) via Second Life on 15-16 October. It’s another new course that we’re very excited to be piloting in the online medium.

Speaking of online events, registration is open for the next entry in our “CDP Presents” series of monthly webinars. The topic this time around will be “Behavioral Health Concerns in Military Connected Patients”. The webinar will be held from 12:00-1:30 p.m. EDT on 14 October. Those who attend the webinar and complete a brief post-event survey and assessment will be eligible for one free CE. If you haven’t checked them out, we’ve also got a series of recordings of previous entries in this series. There are several great topics to watch.

Even with all of our online events, we’ve still got plenty of traditional face-to-face training going on as well. This week our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program visited San Juan College in Farmington, NM. Next week the UC4 team will be headed to Harrisonburg, VA to present at James Madison University. If you’d like to learn more about the UC4 program, including how you can bring us to your local college or university, visit the program’s page here.

Registration for the next Regional Civilian One-Week Training event is now open! This event will be held in the Albany, NY-metro area (specifically, Latham, NY) from 26-30 October. Registration for the event is $95 and includes up to 34 CE credits. The five days of training cover a wide variety of topics,  including military culture, the deployment cycle, sleep disorders, working with military families, as well as training in Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy.  If you’d like to be emailed when registration for future Regional One-Week Civilian Training opportunities, please complete the form here.

Finally, over in the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective entry was by Shirl Kennedy. In it she addresses how you can add any CDP-led training events you’ve attended to your LinkedIn profile. It’s a common question that we receive from many participants after our events. It’s a great way of promoting your new skills, as well as spreading the word about CDP and the training we offer. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s it for this time around. Have a great weekend everyone and we’ll see you back here on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column!
