CDP News: Sept 12, 2014

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re enjoying the last few days of summer, but still keeping busy here at the CDP.

Next week our Pacific Northwest Regional 1-Week Civilian training event in the Portland metro area kicks off. It’s running from Monday to Friday and looks like it’ll be a great event! It’s always nice to bring provider together from around the country and interact with them. We’re really looking forward to it! If you’re not going to be there, you’ve still got another chance to attend a 1-week training in 2014. Our final 1-week training of the year, the  Southeast Regional 1-Week Civilian training, will be held 8-12 December in Miami, FL. Head over to the event page here for more information or to sign up.

You don’t even have to travel to take part in CDP’s training. We’ve got currently got two live, online training events coming up. There’s a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia Training in Second Life on 24-25 September. Registration for this event will close on Monday, so if you’re interested in attending, sign up soon! We’ve also got a Prolonged Exposure Therapy Training via Adobe Connect on 28-29 October. Registration for this event is full, but we still have a few open spots on the wait list, in case of cancellations.

Next week we’ll also be presenting the next iteration of our Topics in Military and Deployment Psychology course. This five-day session brings in uniformed behavioral providers from across the country to take part in training on a spectrum of deployment- and military-related issues that Service members and Veterans face.

We’d like to remind people about our Registration for our Military and Veteran Behavioral Health Post-Master’s Certificate program. For this unique training opportunity, CDP has partnered with Widener University to teach best clinical practices to mental health providers. The program covers a wide variety of topics including military culture, the deployment cycle, challenges faced by military families, depression, suicide and many more. This program is designed for non-military mental health professionals with at least a master’s degree who are actively treating, or plan to treat, the military/veteran population. The program is held over three weekends at Widener University in Chester, PA. For more information or to register please visit the program page here.

In the CDP Blog this week, the Staff Perspective column featured a Q&A between Dr. Heather Anson and Dr. Annie Murray, a former Navy aviator and current psychologist at Naval Medical Center San Diego. Dr. Murray provides her unique and interesting insight into the world of military psychology. Also, don’t forget to read this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with the latest in news, journal articles and useful links from all around the Web.

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you on Monday for a new entry in our By the Numbers column!
