CDP News: Sept. 26, 2014
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. The seasons may be changing, but the CDP’s mission to deliver high-quality training to civilian and military behavioral health provides remains the same! It was a busy week and we’ve got lots more events coming up soon as well.
This past week we held our first online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) training in Second Life. CDP’s Deputy Director, Dr. Bill Brim presented to the audience on Thursday and Friday for a successful event. We’ve got another online Prolonged Exposure training at the end of October. The event is full for now, but we’ll be adding more online training opportunities in the near future, so keep an eye on our training calendar!
Speaking of Prolonged Exposure training, next Tuesday and Wednesday Dr. Kevin Holloway will be presenting on PE to the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island in Hempstead, NY. The CDP frequently receives requests for our subject matter experts to speak at various functions. If you or your organization would like to host a CDP speaker, please visit our Speakers Bureau page for more information or to submit a request.
On Monday, our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program will be at the American College Counseling Association Conference in San Antonio, TX. For more information about the UC4 or to learn how you can bring the program to your local college or university, please visit the program page here.
Registration is continuing for our final 1-week training of the year, the Southeast Regional 1-Week Civilian training, will be held 8-12 December in Miami, FL. These week-long events are great opportunities for behavioral health providers to receive a wide variety of training on deployment and military-related topics. Head over to the event page here for more information or to sign up.
We’d like to remind people about our Registration for our Military and Veteran Behavioral Health Post-Master’s Certificate program. For this unique training opportunity, CDP has partnered with Widener University to teach best clinical practices to mental health providers. The program covers a wide variety of topics including military culture, the deployment cycle, challenges faced by military families, depression, suicide and many more. This program is designed for non-military mental health professionals with at least a master’s degree who are actively treating, or plan to treat, the military/veteran population. The program is held over three weekends at Widener University in Chester, PA. For more information or to register please visit the program page here.
In the CDP Blog this week, the Staff Perspective was by Dr. Holly O’Reilly. In it she took a look at personality disorders in the military. The recent changes in the new DSM-V have prompted many questions, so Dr. O’Reilly summarizes the personality disorders and discusses how they can impact Active Duty military personnel. Also, don’t forget to read this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with the latest in news, journal articles and useful links from all around the Web.
That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you on Monday for a new entry in our By the Numbers column!
