Heartbreaking stories mark the memory of more than 11 500 children who died of firearm injuries in the US during 2019-2023; 3 in 10 were suicides, mostly occurring in the child’s home. Over those 5 years, the firearm death rate among children and adolescents rose by approximately 49%, with a sharp increase between 2019 and 2021. Since 2020, firearm injury has been the leading mortality cause in those under age 18.
