The percentage of the nation's medical schools that teach military culture, according to a recent article in Army Times, Building cultural bridges between doctors, troops.

The article points out that just 36% of veterans are treated at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers; the rest are seen by civilian doctors, who also see millions of military family members. 

"Understanding what these patients have experienced during their time in service is vital to good patient care, military officials said recently in a seminar at the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting

The article discusses a new course -- Military Culture: Core Competencies for Health Care Providers -- developed jointly by CDP, the VA, and the Department of Defense.  The free course includes four modules:

  • Self-Awareness and Introduction to Military Ethos
  • Military Organization and Roles
  • Stressors and Resources
  • Treatment Resources and Tools

Those who complete the course can earn continuing education credits.
