CDP News: July 15, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. While we didn’t have a lot of outside activity this week, we’re working hard on preparations for the second half of this year. We’ve got a lot of exciting events on the horizon!

Staff Perspective: New VA Suicide Prevention Efforts

We all know that suicide among Veterans is a significant problem. The Veteran’s Administration (VA) recently released information that highlights the extent of this problem and showcases the VA’s efforts to combat suicide. The data covers the records of over 50 million Veterans, ranging from 1979 through 2014 across all 50 states.

The percentage of U.S. military Veterans "who completed the Veterans Health Module (VHM) of the 2011 and 2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (n=10,406)" who reported suicidal ideation, according to an article published online before print in the journal Epidemiology -- Population mental health among US military veterans: Results of the Veterans Health Module of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2011-2012. The article indicated that 1% of Veterans in the sample reported attempting suicide.
