It was the summer of 2007 and I was in the homestretch of planning a wedding to my best friend, an active duty psychologist for the U.S. Navy stationed at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center (now Walter Reed Military Medical Center). We had chosen November 10th for our wedding date. I loved the idea of a fall wedding and my husband, also a former Marine, assured me that he would never forget our anniversary if we got married on the Marine Corps birthday.

Review of The RAND Report:

I recently had the opportunity to attend a webinar by the authors of the new RAND Report: “The Deployment Life Study: Methodological Overview and Baseline Sample Description.”  This is a topic that’s of interest to me both personally and professionally, so I wanted to share what I learned.  This is a 3-year study that is still ongoing, whose objective is to identify the antecedents, correlates, and consequences of family readiness across the deployment cycle.

Provider sustainment is a challenge facing many military mental health and other health care providers. The book, “Gifts of the Heart,” written by Dr. Hassan A. Tettah, is a tale of how a Navy surgeon sustains himself through and after his arduous deployment in the Helmand Valley of Afghanistan. While this story is not an autobiography, it was influenced by real life events. The author was a Navy surgeon who first deployed to the Persian Gulf in 2005 and then later deployed to Afghanistan in 2011.
