FY 2013 costs of the VA and DoD health systems, respectively, according to a report issued earlier this year by the Government Accountability Office -- Department-Level Actions Needed to Assess Collaboration Performance, Address Barriers, and Identify Opportunities.
The first is the number of OEF/OIF/OND Veterans seen for potential PTSD at VHA facilities following their return from Iraq or Afghanistan, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs' most current release of its quarterly Report on VA Facility Specific Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Operation New Dawn (OND) Veterans Coded with Potential PTSD (PDF). The report includes cumulative data from 1st Qtr FY 2002 through 3rd Qtr FY 2012 (October 1, 2001 – June 30, 2012).
The percentage of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who are using community-based mental health care, according to a report issued earlier this month by the National Council for Behavioral Health, Meeting the Behavioral Health Needs of Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In real numbers, that's about 657,000 vets. And by 2014, the report says, 40 percent (970,000 veterans) will be using community-based care.
The number of sexual assaults reported in the military last year, versus the number that actually take place each year, according to Pentagon estimates. These numbers appeared in a Bloomberg article about a new "wingman" rule adopted by the Air Force in the wake of a sex abuse scandal at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. The expanded wingman policy, which requires trainees to be accompanied whenever they are outside their dormitory, was criticized for placing a burden on the victims by Protector Our Defenders, an advocacy group for sexual assault victims in the military.
That's the year the first veteran's court opened, in Buffalo, NY, according to the National Center for State Courts.
