CDP News: Nov. 8, 2013

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of CDP News! We like to take a few moments each Friday to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re very proud to announce the launch of a brand-new online training course that the CDP was deeply involved, along with other organizations including the DoD and VA, in creating, Military Culture: Core Competencies for Health Care Professionals.

This is the first of four modules in a program designed to increase knowledge about the uniqueness of military culture and how it can impact psychological health and care. A knowledge of military culture is vitally important for any behavioral health provider interested in working with Service members, Veterans or their families. This module also offers two continuing credit hours. It’s a great course and we’re very proud of it. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the military and its culture will definitely benefit from completing it. For those interested in learning even more, the CDP has created a section here that provides additional resources and information to supplement the main course.

Next Thursday our University Counseling Center Core Competency program is headed to Rhonert Park, CA to present at Sonoma State University. For more information on the UC4 program or to learn how you can bring us to your local college or university, click here.

This week’s Staff Perspective column featured Dr. Diana Dolan’s interview with Dr. Alan Peterson from STRONG STAR, a multi-disciplinary, multi-site research consortium. They talk about the history and on-going research the program is involved in. Don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update as well. There’s plenty of interesting journal articles, relevant news and links from around the Web.

The CDP team continues to grow! We’d like to officially welcome Melissa Mistretta on board. She joins us as the Project Manager for the JIF-Champion Program. If you or someone you know is interested in working for the CDP, head over to our Jobs section and take a look at the various career opportunities we have available.

Finally, as we head into this holiday weekend, be sure and take some time to reflect on and remember the sacrifices of our Service members, Veterans and their families. We’ll see everyone next week.
