CDP News: Dec. 20, 2013

Welcome to another Friday edition of CDP News! We like to use this space every week to review recent news and happenings, in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. The big news this week was the announcement of our next 1-week civilian training course. It’s going to be held 14-18 April 2014 at the NTSB Conference Center in Washington, D.C. We’re currently planning on opening up registration for the event in January, so keep an eye out! We’ll have more specific information on the event as registration approaches. For general information about the program as a whole, please visit our civilian training page here.

We also wrapped up our most recent iteration of the military orientated “Topics in Deployment Psychology” course. The session got off to a bit of a rough start, with last week’s foul weather prompting delays and closures on Monday and Tuesday, but this week went quite well. Thanks to all the efforts of our staff and guest presenters, we were able to get all the training in for our participants.

Our training schedule is slowing down a bit with the holidays rapidly approaching, but we’ve already got several opportunities on the books in the new year. We’ve got a UC4-e program at the University of California Irvine on 7-8 January and we just announced a UC4 event at the University of Texas – Tyler on 29 January.

One of the programs that CDP supports, Star Behavioral Health Providers, recently got some nice publicity. Michigan State University’s radio station did an interview talking about the program and the important work that it does. You can read and listen to the segment here.

This week’s Staff Perspective column was by Dr. Anthony McCormick. In it, he talked about his positive experience running a group therapy session for Service members and Veterans who have deployed. It’s an interesting look at an alternative path for treatment. It’s definitely worth checking out. Don’t forget to look at the Research Update from this week as well. It’s always packed full of interesting news, journal articles and relevant links from around the Web. It’ll have to hold you over for two weeks, since we’re not going to have one next week due to the holidays.

Finally, we’d like to welcome Dr. Eric Kloppel to the CDP! He’s joined us as the JIF Champion Consultant at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. That’s all for now, have a great weekend everyone!
