CDP News: Feb. 28, 2014
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to take this time to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. The big news this week is that we’ve open registration for our first live online Prolonged Exposure Training. This training will be held 10-11 April 2014 via Adobe Connect and will cover the same material as our in-person training events do. There will also be CEUs offered for those interested. Best of all, the event is free.
The only requirements for participants are to register, obtain the text for the course, Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD, Emotional Processing of Traumatic Experiences Therapist Guide, by Foa, Hembree, and Rothbaum (2007), and a computer, with microphone, capable of joining the meeting. We’re very excited about this program and though it’s our first, it certainly won’t be our last. We’ve also got another online PE training session scheduled for 8-9 May 2014 to be held in Second Life. The CDP is working hard to offer training for as many behavioral health providers as we can. This is just one of the avenues available, if you have any ideas or suggestions for other ways we can disseminate training, please let us know.
We’ve also got plenty of face-to-face training events on the schedule as well. On Tuesday, our University Counseling Center Core Competency program is headed to Baltimore, Maryland to present at Morgan State University. In the next few months, we’ve got several other schools to visit as well and we’re adding more all the time. Speaking of upcoming events, our Mid-Atlantic Regional 1-Week Civilian Training held 14-18 April in Washington, D.C. is filling up fast. If you’re interested in attending, make sure you sign-up soon. It’s a great opportunity for providers who are interested in increasing their skills working with a military population or learning how to start working with them. However, if you can’t make it to D.C., the program will also be in St. Louis, MO 9-13 June. Keep an eye out for more information as it is finalized.
This week’s Staff Perspective column was from Dr. Kelly Chrestman. In it, she took a side-by-side look at the changes in the PTSD diagnosis in the new DSM V. It’s handy to see an “at-a-glance” chart detailing the differences and changes. It’s definitely worth a look if you missed it. Also, worth a look, is this week’s Research Update. Our in-house librarian, Shirl Kennedy, has compiled the latest useful journal articles, relevant news and links from around the Web into digest form.
