CDP News: Feb. 13, 2015

Happy Friday the 13th and welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It was a busy week as we had lots to do in advance of the upcoming long, holiday weekend.

The University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) team headed out west this week. On Thursday we presented at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM. Today we’ll be delivering the course at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. If you’re interested in more information about the UC4 program or want to see about bringing it to your local college or university, head over to the UC4 section of our webpage.

Next week we’ll be presenting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) training via Adobe Connect. This one will be held from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST on 18-19 February. Our online training events have proven to be very popular and have received great reviews from participants. Our next scheduled online event will be a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training presented via Second Life. It will run 2-3 April. We should be opening registration for this event in the next week or so. If you’d like to be notified via email when registration opens for this and future events, you can sign up for our online events list here: http://eepurl.com/0X4HX.

There’s about three weeks left to sign up for our Southwest Regional Civilian 1-Week Training. The event will be held in Phoenix, AZ from 16-20 March. This week-long training includes numerous training sessions taught by CDP subject matter experts and a choice of two tracks, the first is on PTSD treatment and the other focuses on health psychology and sleep disorders. For more information on this great training, you can click here to see the agenda. Registration is $95 and there are more than 30 CEUs available during the program. Seats are limited in this training.

If you’re interested in learning more about military culture, we suggest checking out the four-module Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals. This self-paced online course is designed to help providers gain an understanding of the importance of and breadth of military culture. Each of the four modules in the course is eligible for two CEU credits upon completion of the final exam.

This week’s Staff Perspective column is by Dr. Lisa French. In it, she discusses the Department of Defense Suicide Event Report (DoDSER). This is an important program that provides extensive information about suicide events and rates across all of branches of military service. Also, don’t forget to take a look at this week’s new Research Update. As always it’s packed with the latest news, articles and useful links and well-worth checking out.

That’s it for this week. We hope everyone has a great holiday weekend and stays warm out there! Join us back here next week for more information on the CDP Blog.
